Ok, so I finally found a replacement spring for my engine lid, but I have no idea how to install it without maiming myself.

Thats easy, hook the spring on to a trolley jack i:e on the bar between the wheels and lifting frame so that you can open up the spring by raising the jack. Once you do that you can slip washers between each coil of the spring making it longer, install it in the car then push down on the hinge to free up and remove washers, job done.
