My gauges were recently redone, repainted and serviced. Although the bulbs are new, the connections are clean and the wiring is correct and has voltage the lights will not illuminate unless I pull the fixture from the gauge and really rub it against metal. Obviously this indicates that there is no ground getting to the bulb but I am uncertain how to fix this.
Clean the paint of the back to the mounting bracket on the back of the gauge? Run a ground wire to the back of the gauges? Seems overkill.
The ground is coming from the body and where the gauge mounting bracket connects to the dash so if that is clean there is not much more I can do? Am I missing something?
Thank you.

Maybe they painted the inside of the metal cylinder that the bulb slides into? Or the cylinder prongs (2 or 3 of them allow the bulb to slide in smoothly) may not be tight enough? That's a common problem that I've seen with T34s.
As long as you're sure the two thumb-nuts are tightly holding the gauges into the dash then that should be enough ground contact.

Yeah, there is not too much too it. I will clean the threaded rods, the outer cylinder walls and make sure the prongs are not tight enough. Here is another thing, when I have the cylinder pulled out of the gauge with the bulb in it, I have to rub that on metal to get it to light up - but the amount of rubbing and touching I have to do seems abnormal and extreme which boils it down to the bulb fixtures, not the gauge. Anyhow, I will look at everything.
Thank you.

Your description points to an earthing issue. If you have too rub as much as you describe then use a little wet and dry to remove any excess paint nad get a good earth. BW Graham
