I have fitted a cylinder head temperature gauge to my T34, and have placed the thermocouple under the No.3 spark plug. However, I am a newcomer to VW air-cooled engines, and have no idea what the normal reading should be under typical driving conditions, or what the safe maximum temperature is . Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience?
I presume the normal cylinder head temperature is similar for all VW air-cooled motors , but if not , I should mention that my car has had a Type 4 engine fitted (1770cc ) before I bought the car.

Hi Philip, well I´ve had a same gauge fitted im my daily Type 3 driver made by VDO. It was a originnal 1600ccm Type 3 motor. The guage has had a range from 100° to 600°F The cylinderhead temparature for all aircooled engines -even tuned- is maximum 480°F or 250°C As far as I remember my gauge was normally showing aprox. 350°
Unfortunately a valve broke at about 3800/min and the engine was blowed up... but that had nothing to do with that gauge or its sensor.
Best regards from Berlin!

Hi Mathias, Thank you for your advice . The gauge I fitted is the same VDO and mine also reads around 350 when cruising on the level.
But I notice that it increases to 400/425 when climbing a long hill, and then quickly returns to 350 on the level again. I presume this is normal too (with an older water-cooled car I would also expect the temperature to increase when climbing a hill).
I will also try to stay below 3800rpm !! Thanks again and best wishes from New Zealand.
