Here's some expert installation advice from Bata, who created these clips.
"I suggest NOT using any metal Screwdrivers. Try to use paint stir stick or a plastic stick, thin like a screw driver. We use a plastic wedge that the glass installation guys do, it’s home made. The idea is to not scratch the clip if you slip. The clip gets slipped on the bottom first, using your thumb, place pressure on the clip pushing upwards. The top has two tabs, keeping pressure on the clip you can gently press each tab down over the window molding and it can be done pretty tightly. The clips should fit snuggly with no gaps."

While I understand the folly of using a metal screwdriver on soft aluminum parts, my normal method using Popsicle sticks and paint stirring sticks wasn't working.
For the rear, should I install the clips before I put the window in the car?

It's always better to install all the aluminum trim pieces into the rubber seal prior to installing the complete unit into the T34.

Nope, that was a couple years ago. Sold 25 sets in 1 week.
