My name is Art Covert, I'm from Battle Creek, MI USA, and after 5 type 14s, I'm looking for my 1st 34 - preferably a 345.
Battle Creek is on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad mainline and is halfway between Chicago and Sarnia/Port Huron. As such, it was the crew change point. As a boy, my neighbor was an engineer on the GTW. He would take a train to Chicago and return with another one day, and then take one to Port Huron and return another day. On one of these trips to Port Huron/Sarnia, he bought a brand new '62 343, the first one I ever saw and quite rare back in those days.
When I started to drive and began looking for my 1st car, his influence gravitated me towards Ghias (all my 'hoodlum friends' had ho-hum Beetles). Now that I'm old and have a little more disposable income, I'm looking for my 1st 34.
I think I would prefer a solid, but not perfect car - an easy restoration. The good thing about doing a restoration, is that when you're done, you know EXACTLY what you've got.
Please read my blog for more about me and my Ghia life.
Oh yeah, and if anyone has one to sell, or knows of one for sale, give me a heads-up!
Best to all.... Art

Hello Lee, Simon, et al... As you might already know, I 'settled' on a '67 343 that I just bought from Richard Interlandi in N Palm Beach FL. Oddly, Richard bought this car out from underneath me a few months ago as I have some 35 jpgs of it from the owner in CA late last year. Richard found a 345 shortly after and this one came back on the market.
Clearly, the Ghia gods WANT me to have this car!
So now it's home, I've got in insured and titled and have my "TYPE 34" vanity plate ordered. It's going in the body shop next week to get Botoxed (ie a few wrinkles removed) and a little bit of rust repair. I've told them just to leave it it primer, and as soon as I find a new windshield, I will strip the rest and eventually return it to it's original Lotus White.
Overall, it's a very SOLID car. While NOT the '69 345 that would be my ideal (wonder what the reserve on that one was, Lee?) I am very happy with it and look forward to getting it back in showroom condition.
Now, I need to find a good 143 coupe so that I will have a complete set (I also have a '72 141).
Best to all...

Congratulations on your first T34, Art! It will be a good one to learn about T34s, enjoy driving, and improve as you go.
The Toga White 1969 M345 in Germany is still available at 11K Euro (US$16K) but you'd have to get it back to the USA ($1500-2000 more).

Art, I'm at the PH end of the Chicago to Port Huron line (about 150 miles NE of you). I just got my 64 T-34 running for the first time in the 15 months I've had it. Over on the Samba (in the type 3 forum, I have a build thread (reads more like a digest) of what I've done to mine. With your car, that's 3 in Michigan that I know of now.

Bob; We need to meet in Lansing for lunch. I have several Type 14 friends and we've been threatening to do so for quite a while. I think it would be cool, if you and I showed up in our 34s. Are you thinking the 3rd is that one in Dearborn? There was also one for sale up around Flint/Saginaw a year or two ago, but don't know whatever happened to it.

My friend John just bought one in the spring for his girl friend Jill, and has been doing some minor work to it. Mine's not currently road worthy, as it has no interior, and I'm still working on other things as well. My intention though, is to have it up and running for next years T-3 Invasion in Colorado (John, Jill and I (and my wife) are going to caravan out there together).
