Anyone have suggestions as to the best method for removing the chrome gauge rings without damaging them?

I have done this with some success. I used a small pocket screw driver to pry up the lip all the way around the gauge. The hard part was the sealer that karmann used between the chrome ring and the body of the gauge.Type 3 gauges are much easier to open they only crimped the edge in a few places.

Dave, I think the sealer you're mentioning is actually the remains of the "O" rings that go between the gauge and the dash panel.
I did what you mentioned as well, and while high on the difficulty scale, it can still be done that way. Re-crimping it, is the hard part, in that you can get the crimp offset, which kind of looks like hell after is all back together (I did that on the first of the 4 gauges). Took a little work to get it back in place.
