Inside the spare tire area, to the right of the aluminum VIN# plate is a stamped number. There has never been a conclusive explanation for this number by Karmann or anyone else. We (collective old-timers) believe it may be the consecutive numbering system for each model year (ie the 825th 1965). What is the stamped # in your T34 and what is your VIN#? If we get enough stamped #s with VIN#'s then we should be able to make some assumptions. Here's the stamped area in my 1965 M346 #345 012 044 with 509.

My '66 344 chassis no 346 036 330 has 6003 stamped beside the VIN plate
I'll get the number from the '63 as soon as I next get to Dereks.

Here's John Kanter's 1963 M343 #0 101 960 and the stamped # showing is 4. Since that's a mid-October 1962 date, this kinda smashes my theory of the stamped # being representative of the consecutive number for each model year or even for each month. I'm at a loss to explain it now.

Don't be so sure Lee, there may be numbers under the riveted tag. The stamped number is pressed before paint, the alu tag is attached after paint...

I don't even have the benefit of having a VIN plate so I doubt I still have numbers stamped there. I'll double check though.

As I said my VIN plate is missing, but you can see that if it were there the first number would be covered. VIN# 0 306 132 stamped# 2358

vin 0 249 533 with 8 stamped beside the plate, but like others above, I suspect there are more numbers behind the plate. This car is under going resto, so the plate might get removed for new plate, I'll report back if so...

A thread was started at the LoveBugFans forum about this same topic. Someone with a Beetle convertible was asking if anyone knew what the number meant. ID Stamp topic
