The nose badge on my early Ghia has been painted black some time in the past. Should it be all chromed, or is the low pitted area painted in some grey color? I will certainly remove the black paint, but I`m not sure if it`s good enough to be chromed. Here is my badge compaired too the badge on Lee`s `62.

The badge on my 1962 is NOS, so that's the best reference for your restoration. But before you get work done on your original badge, you may want to wait for the repro one we're doing. I'm sending my NOS one to Heiko in Germany to be used as the master for the repro version. We hope to have it available by May-June. The cost of the repro will be much lower than the cost to have yours chromed. Once you have the repro then you can sell your original one and the total cost will have been nothing.

You are right, the repro might be the way to go.
But still wondering, is the low area also crome, looks very different to the rest of the badge.

It's all the same color/finish. The polished flat areas of the VW logo, 1500 text, and outer rim make the inner bumpy section duller. But it's all the same.

Chromium plating needs mirror finished surface beneath it in order to be shiny, otherwise it will look just like on the NOS badge. (Like Lee said but in different words.)
Protects the surface from elements as well but totally different looks.
