I was lead to believe all early T3/T34 gas tanks were the same however now I don't think thats the case. My car had a Beetle tank when I got it so I managed to find a LHD T3 tank from an early Squareback and bought that. Dropping it in tonight it certainly fits ok but the vent pipe doesn't line up with the vent pipe in the body and also the tank vent is a different diameter.
Not really a problem as I'll just change it but thought some would like to know. Will post a picture in the weekend to show what I mean.

The early ones are different than the later ones. The pipe is straight vs angled. I have not yet been able to confirm the cut-off years between the two styles.

I have a spare LHD tank that came from an early 1967 car if that helps.

There were a couple of minor revisions made to the fuel tank. One of them was the vent line diameter, and the other was as Lee pointed out, straight versus angled. On my 64, I used an NOS tank that I got thru Everett Barnes. It was dated April 1969. That tank used a straight vent, but also had the smaller diameter tubing on it. I ended up making a reducer bushing for the vent line.
