It's time to start thinking about wheels and tires. According to www.type34.com/library/29-authenticity-wheels/658 the black wheels and thin-slot trim rings I have now are correct. Somewhere I'd read that my car should have emerald and white wheels. My '62 came to me with red & white wheels. I'm still not 110% certain what is correct. IMHO, the two-tone wheels with early trim rings, like the lowlight T1 Ghias, look best. Regarding tires; I'm torn between going with the thin whitewall or plain blackwall. I've even considered going with bias ply tires, as I really like the look, although they kinda suck for everyday driving. Thoughts?

The Ruby Red 1962 would have the Pearl White rims with the aluminum trim rings that hug the outer edge, like your low-light. The Emerald 1963 would have the Black rims with the full-size thin-slotted trim rings that hide the Black rim.

I like this one. I think the slotted trim rings scream "LATE MODEL!"

So how about whitewall vs blackwall? That's the difference between an $80 tire and a $160 tire.

I love the thin 3/4" whitewall tires on original T34s with two-tone paint schemes. Looks elegant & stylish to my eyes. T34s with custom rims tend to look better with blackwalls since the focus is on the rims. Black wall tires are the easy & less-expensive way out. But when have we EVER been OK with the easy & inexpensive way???

After dithering for weeks (literally) between expensive whitewall and cheap blackwall, I broke down and coughed up the $800 for whitewalls. I had the shopping cart page up in my browser for over 2 weeks, but I just couldn't pull the trigger.

Hi there, I have carefully read the here above exchange of posts between Thom and Lee, as I am now finding myself with the same questionning. The article related to the link says : From 0 000 269 thru 0 268 999 (Jan '61 thru October '63), basically all the 1962s, 1963s, and the early 1964s, [glow=red,2,300]the rims were 5-lug with four wide slots. They were fitted with a chrome hub cap (#131 601 151) and were without beauty trim rings.[/glow] That's exactly the case with the rims of my April 1963 car. See picture. The article goes on : the rims' color should pearl-white (1962) or black (1963 - 1969). But mine are different ...they are silver grey... :(and it looks like if they have been silver grey for quite a long time. Should my rims be painted black ? or is there a chance that there could have been more paint alternatives, or on option perhaps ?. The point is that I don't like the idea of black rims...they don't appeal me. I would be more in favoiur of white pearl rims. In April 1963, my car could have been equipped with a remaining batch of such 1962 white rims... What do you think ?

I got the answer a couple of days ago. Below the silver grey paint the original paint of the rim remains : and it is...BLACK !
