My 1963 car is currently equipped with a Blaupunkt MW band only radio that was fitted circa 1985 by her latest US owner. It works fine, but...I can listen to ONE - and ONE ONLY - radio station, and it is a news only station, not one minute of music in 24 hours !
See below :
The time had come to put an end to that situation and I was first tempted to replace this radio by the right original model : a T code, 1963, bulb (tube ?) Blaupunkt / Frankfurt radio. I found one for sale, but I find it big, voluminous, with the other part (transfo ?)attached to it. Price asked for is 200 Euros, for a dirty and dusty radio, not tested, and not sure it is working.
A couple of weeks ago, at the Valence swap meet I discussed with a specialist in vintage car radios and I found out that I could in turn use a more modern, transistorised, model, a lot less voluminous, with the quality of sound allowed by the use of of transistors. I asked him to make an offer to me.
Here it is :
A nice Y code (= 1968) Frankfurt radio, with 4 bands : L,M,K and U, with grey push-buttons.
Completely refurbished, in full working condition, tested, sold with all connexion cables and parts, the instructions manual in 4 languages, and with a one year guarantee !
As I own the two grey turn buttons and the face-plate, this radio was offered to me at the price of 200 Euros (+10 for inland shipping). The price of the full radio set, including the 2 grey buttons and the dual part T34 face plate would have been 325 Euros.
For an additional 25 Euros the radio could be delivered with an adapter for mp3, Ipod, Iphone. (see bottom pic). The adapter cable can be driven through to the glove box, with the mp3 or the Iphone placed inside the glove box..
The dilemna was, then : 1963 for authenticity, or 1968 for quality, efficiency, and modernity ?
I fell for the 1968, and bought it today.
I will receive it next week.
(After all, one of the previous owners may have equipped the car with this radio, in 1968 or 1969...)
This story will perhaps be instructive for other T34 owners here or there.
The dealer, Mr François Degreve is based in Strasburg, and enjoys a high reputation among AC VW owners. He regularly sells his radios outside France, to neighbouring Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, etc.
